RHYS TIVEY - EPK

Singer-songwriter and trumpeter, Rhys Tivey debuts Backward EP with a June 2016 release. Backward EP achieves a mesmerizing and diverse patchwork of art-rock, indie-folk, and R&B influences, conjuring melodies of memorable yet off-kilter simplicity. His voice is at times deep and powerful and at others loose and soulful, interlaced with haunting and energetic trumpet reminiscent of Miles Davis. 

As for many artists before him—St. Vincent, Grizzly Bear, Snarky Puppy—instrumental roots fall gently aside to reveal an authentic songwriting sound committed less to a defined genre than to one’s inner cadence. As a teen trumpeter in the Empire State Youth Orchestra from 2001 - 2008, Tivey absorbed classical composition sensibilities while preparing for the orchestra’s performances at venues like Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood, and Dvorak Hall. A graduate of the NYU Jazz Department, Tivey collaborated with his former professor, Jean Michel-Pilc, in 2014 to record a contemporary jazz project, entitled No Voice No More, and perform at venues in NYC, like Cornelia Street Cafe and the Cutting Room, gradually integrating vocals and songwriting into performances. Backward EP marks Tivey's debut as both a singer-songwriter and trumpeter, and at recent performances in New York City and Los Angeles, Tivey has proven himself a captivating performer and bandleader, enlisting rising talents of indie rock, R&B, and hip-hop for collaboration. 

An alignment between artistic aptitude, spirituality, and political activism ties back to Tivey’s personal history. He was born in upstate New York to two visual artists, Liza Tivey the traditional bronze sculptor, and Hap Tivey the modern light sculptor, who undertook substantial training as a Zen-buddhist monk in Japan. An Ambassador to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, advocating support to end HIV/AIDS, Rhys Tivey contributes to the work of his grandmother, the legendary actor and activist Elizabeth Taylor. Trained at Integral Yoga Institute, Tivey has added yoga, meditation, and music improvisation to curricula at underserved public middle and high schools in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Promoting awareness between mind, body, and environment, he has sought to empower young individuals to observe and so alter thoughts and behaviors to optimize wellbeing and social responsibility. A predominant political undertone regarding climate change flows throughout the lyrics of the EP, felt as both a bitter awakening toward nature’s decay and a spiritual reverence for nature’s timeless reach.

Now I can recall the cause of the fall. No one can resist an invisible fist. With a white tooth grin shinin', he said, "don't you need more speed?"

We're the ones who wrote the rules and won. But the price of the ticket is the heat of the sun.

I Sing

I had a dream that my mother went into the sea and I wept in floods. Yet still I knew that she had not left. I saw her in Earth and sky, and I heard her in the birds and leaves and branches. I felt her in the mother of us all, and I fell down and took dirt in hand.

Some big boys pump her for more dark liquid gold. Some sick boys sell seven-year slaves to hungry lost souls. They disgrace the mother of us all, so I fall down and listen for her call.

I will survive my kin. I will heal with or without them. You are a warrior when you sit up and give thanks for a simple breath. You are a woman and a man when you retrieve your head from the sand. 

So I lift up my trumpet and I sing, and I reason with the devil and kings.

To find love in a nervous hour, bloodshot eyes pursue avenues of old money, new profit. Even in florescent light, a subtle flame illuminates the blood of ancient veins.  

And I listen, and I fall away, and I hear that

Trumpet golden hum. Gabriel, voice of the sun, sings, "Be no longer afraid of the darkest day."

To find love in a lonely hour, when God, she seems to vanish from all books and all places, I will wonder if that three letter word is just a symbol for all colors, all faces, all miracles, and also for nothing at all.  

And I listen, and I fall away, and I hear that
